How to Train for Your Performance in 3-Day Splits

practice tools preparation time management training plan

It’s summertime here in Indiana, and we skipped right to “too hot”! It just means trampoline in the morning, and then inside practicing!

Yes, summer is a time for rest, recreation, and relaxation. But it can also be a time of refresh, reset, and revitalization. (and EXCITEMENT! Are you coming to Fearless Camp online this weekend?!)

If you’re reading this, you are clear with the fact that you have performance weaved throughout your life. Take a sec and think about what performances you have coming up.

HEY! You didn’t take a sec, did you? Ok last chance. Give yourself a sec…ahhhh….ok, think.

Nice. The most common upcoming performance that comes to mind at the end of May is your school's large ensemble placement audition in late august. You may have summer music camp or DCI events, or summer concerts to perform. All of these events work as good fear…otherwise known as inspiration!

I (Jeff) started a fitness company in Toronto in the late 90’s, way back when I was into working out a lot. My trainer approached our workout plan in this way.

3-DAY CYCLE - THE GYM WEEK

Monday & Thursday: Back/Biceps/Cardio/Abs
Tuesday & Friday: Chest/Triceps/Cardio/Abs
Wednesday & Saturday: Leg Day (UGH!!)/Cardio
Sunday: Day Off

It’s a 3-Day Cycle that repeats one time, every week. This works really well for practicing as well!

The Gym by the Numbers:
6 times a week–Cardio
4 times a week–Abs
2 times a week–Back/BicepsChest/Triceps/Legs
1 time a week–Day off

The same can be true for your practice room workouts.

WARNING!! This looks like a lot…it is. Modify accordingly for your realities of daily-time-restraints and definition-of-success.

What do you want AND what can you do?

The more simple we make something, the easier it CAN get. This resulting ease, though, depends on how good we are at simplifying.

Here’s a way to idiot-proof our hours of work in our days and week. 25-minute chunks, set the timer at the beginning, and let the timer bring you back to earth…set the timer for your break, and then repeat the process with the next “session” you have planned.

Oh so simple. NOT easy…wow, not easy. It hasn’t been easy for me to sit here and finish this newsletter…all in one day!! And it’s taken 5 sessions. Weeeee....ADHD at its best?

If you want more tools for simplifying and thus efficiency-creating strategies and experiences, we have the 16th annual Fearless Camp happening online this weekend. We promise it will NOT be a horrible zoom experience.

Don’t believe us? Come and see. (See what I did there?) It's an immersive experience with breakout rooms and interactive hot-seating. You get to ask your questions! We chat about some reasons we fear, and how to replace the fears, and try them out…and repeat. It’s all about collecting experience and self-knowledge. This weekend is the perfect time for that.

Join Us!

Hope to see you Friday! To your fears, the way out is through. For you, this weekend…….

The way oot is in, baby!

Have a wonnnnderful week!!

Jeff and Katy
